As of [DM-13790](https://jira.lsstcorp.org/browse/DM-13790?devStatusDetailDialog=branch) the LSST DM stack has switched from using the `geom` package, to `sphgeom`, Serge Monkewitz’s modern replacement written in C++.

The next step in [RFC-460](https://jira.lsstcorp.org/browse/RFC-460) is to replace the guts of `geom` with most of `lsst.afw.geom`, while leaving aliases in `lsst.afw.geom` for backwards compatibility.
